Thank you for your interest in volunteering as a tutor with Action Tutoring.

To help us assess your suitability to volunteer with us, please complete the form below. The information you provide helps us to assess your eligibility to work with children. We will ask you for:

  • Your name, address and occupational details

  • Your qualifications

  • Your motivations and experience (if relevant)

  • Your work history for the last five years (if applicable, as part of our safer recruitment practices)

  • Two references (professional or character)

  • Optional questions about your background, for our diversity monitoring.

You can save and resume your progress at any time.

Please note that we take all previous experience into consideration, so please do include anything you think might be relevant. Once we've reviewed your answers we may then contact you to arrange a video call to learn more about your experience and qualifications.

If you're having any difficulties with the application form, please get in touch with us at communications@actiontutoring.org.uk.
Please confirm the following before applying:
We recognise that AI tools can be useful when applying, e.g. to shorten an initial draft answer. We are open to applicants utilising them in their volunteer application. However, we would caution applicants not to rely too much on them. We want to hear your authentic voice and we will be looking for answers that use examples and experiences that are specific to you and not duplicates of other volunteer applications.
Our policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders is available on request: please email safeguarding@actiontutoring.org.uk. Action Tutoring complies fully with the relevant Code of Practice and undertakes to treat all applicants for positions fairly. Successful applicants are required to undertake full training provided by Action Tutoring. You will not be able to tutor until you have completed this training.

Page 3 of 4 - References

As part of our safeguarding policies, we require two references for every volunteer. Please provide the contact details for two referees who can speak to your character and suitability for the role.

Who can be a referee?
Your referees should be professional contacts or trusted members of your community. Examples include:
  • A current or previous manager or work colleague.
  • A university lecturer or school teacher.
  • A coach, activity leader, or faith leader.
Who cannot be a referee?
To ensure we meet our safeguarding requirements, we cannot accept references from:
  • Family members or relatives.
  • HR departments (or employers) that provide "factual-only" references (e.g., those that only confirm your job title and dates of employment). Our reference form requires specific insight into your suitability for working with children.
We will only contact your referees once you have attended your training session, typically one to two weeks after you submit your application, which allows plenty of time for you to notify them in advance. The reference form itself is short and straightforward to complete, though please note that we require email addresses for your referees rather than telephone numbers. Should you need to update your referee details after submitting this form, simply contact us at hello@actiontutoring.org.uk.
