Statement of Understanding

Applicants are required to complete the statement of understanding

I, the undersigned, understand and agree that the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), as program administrator, is under no obligation to select me or any other applicant for the Knight International Journalism Fellowships Program. If selected to be a Knight International Journalism Fellow, I will agree to the premises and conditions set forth in the following statement:

1. The primary purpose of the fellowship is to assist the international news media in ways that are relevant and useful; I am not seeking this fellowship for purposes of tourism, foreign-news coverage, job seeking, or personal and professional reasons that are irrelevant or contrary to the fellowship’s mission. Because the publication of news articles or feature stories written by fellows during the course of their assignments for publication in-country, abroad or in the United States may jeopardize the program or affect the fellows’ visa status, special permission for any reporting or article writing during the fellowship is required from the program administrator.

2. As a precondition for participation, I agree to: - accept the general assignment, destination and general project assignment designated by the administrator (See #7); - take part in the group orientation in Washington on dates designated by the administrator; - if requested, undertake additional preparation for my assignment, such as participating in language classes, which will be made available by the program administrator; - work with the local media outlets and other organizations to fashion a compatible and useful program in the designated country; - write, within 60 days of returning from my fellowship assignment, a post-program evaluation report, a financial report and a status report, the latter for publication by the fellowship program (the program administrator and sponsor retain the rights to the reports).

3. I understand that in order to maximize the use of fellowship resources, all travel will be on an economy-class basis and that in certain cases, living conditions may not be comparable to United States standards.

4. I understand that the program administrator may terminate my fellowship at any time for reasons that are regarded as detrimental to the fellowship, to be determined at the sole discretion of the program administrator or sponsor.

5. I will be responsible for my own passport and visa arrangements and may be asked to assist with other logistical arrangements related to my specific assignment as determined by the program administrator.

6. If I decline the specific assignment, time period or destination selected for me during a particular cycle, I may do so without prejudice to future consideration if I have made and explained this decision for reasons that the program administrator regards as sound.

7. The program administrator will pay for the following expenses: n round-trip economy airfare from my home base in the United States to the assignment country/city; - ground and air program-related travel expenses within the United States and abroad; - living expenses in accordance with generally accepted local standards for the assignment country (the portion allocated for housing may be deducted from the per diem in cases where housing is provided by a partner organization); - an honorarium of $100 for each day of my assignment; - supplemental health insurance coverage may be made available, as necessary, on a basis to be determined by the program administrator for each fellow during the fellowship period.

8. If I am accepted for this program, it is for a single fellowship assignment only, and there is no obligation or expectation of future participation in the program once the assignment is completed. However, I understand that I may reapply for subsequent assignments.

9. I understand and agree that while the program is not under any obligation to pay spouses’ expenses, some consideration for partial support of spouses may be given in special cases of longer fellowship durations.

10. I understand and agree that, if any harm comes to me or my family during the program, neither ICFJ nor the Knight International Journalism Fellowships Program can be held responsible or liable.

11. If I am selected and accept a Knight International Journalism Fellowship, I and the program administrator will enter into a final and binding agreement prior to beginning the program.

12. If I am selected and accept a Knight International Journalism Fellowship, I will permit my likeness to be used in ICFJ and Knight promotional material. This can be in print or electronic form.

13. In applying for a Knight International Journalism Fellowship, I agree to all the conditions set forth in the enclosed application information and understand that, if I am selected, my fellowship may be terminated at any time for cause, as determined by the program administrator.

14. I confirm that all statements in this application are true.
